uses: treatment of anxiety, panic attacks, muscle spasms;  acute treatment of seizures

mechanism of action:  depresses activity in the brain and spinal cord (by enhancing the effect of gamma-aminogutyric acid (GABA) which inhibits the firing of neurons)

side effects
• common: drowsiness, unsteady gait, lightheadedness, slurred speech
• less common: loss of sexual desire, constipation, false sense of well being, fatigue
• serious: difficulty concentrating, anger outbursts, behavior problems, depression, hallucinations, memory impairment, muscle weakness,

concerns: do not stop abruptly;  taper dose gradually, per physician
