scrubbing

Surgery is performed in a sterile environment.  Scrubbing is a procedure that the surgeon uses to clean his hands and forearms, to the elbows, and the the procedure is also used to cleanse the wound prior to incision.  An antibiotic solution is vigorously applies to the forearms, hands, and to the surgical incision site, to remove bacteria from the skin.  This takes about five minutes.  Seen here is a scrub nurse donning (putting on) a sterile operating gown, after scrubbing his hands and forearms, to the elbows.
