Surgery is performed in a sterile environment.
Scrubbing is a procedure that the surgeon uses to clean his hands
and forearms, to the elbows, and the the procedure is also used to
cleanse the wound prior to incision. An antibiotic solution
is vigorously applies to the forearms, hands, and to the surgical
incision site, to remove bacteria from the skin. This takes
about five minutes. Seen here is a scrub nurse donning (putting
on) a sterile operating gown, after scrubbing his hands and forearms,
to the elbows.
