paget's disease

Also known as osteitis deformans, it is a bone disorder in which there is increased resorption and increased deposition of bone.  Patients may presend with back pain or spinal cord or nerve root compression.  There may also be involvement of the skull, and the cranial nerves may be compressed where they leave the skull.  Most commonly involved is the eighth cranial nerve (cochlear nerve) which supplies hearing.  It is suspected that the composer Beethoven became deaf as a result of Paget's disease.
