Nerve Root

Nerve roots leave the spinal canal at every level of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine.  Seen here is a model of the lumbar spine.  The lamina (roof of the spinal canal) has been removed, and the yellow nerve root is seen leaving the spinal canal, just beneath the pedicle.  This nerve root contains both motor and sensory function.
