glasgow coma scale
There are several stages of coma.  Typically, one refers to a patient in coma as someone who is unable to obey commands, speak, or open the eyes to pain.  The most well known grading system is the Glasgow Coma Scale.  In this scale points are given for eye opening, verbal and motor response.  A coma scale score of 15 is normal, while a score of 3-4 is critical.
