is a procedure to open and clean out the carotid artery, with the
goal of decreasing the likelihood of stroke. The artery is "cross
clamped" around the area of the lesion, and the artery is opened
between the clamped areas. Sometimes the surgeon will place
a shunt to bypass the cross clamped artery, and thus preserve flow
to the brain. Sometimes the surgeon will use "burst suppression"
to protect the brain. Once the artery is cleaned out, the wall
of the vessel is sewn closed. |
