% of patients with AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome)
will develop neurologic symptoms. The most common conditions
producing lesions of the nervous system are 1) toxoplasmosis, 2) primary
CNS lymphoma, 3) progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML),
and 4) cryptococcal abscess.
In addition, the human immunodeficiency
virus may cause direct changes within the brain which may include
1) AIDS encephalopathy , 2) AIDS dementia, 3) aseptic meningitis,
and 4) cranial neuropathies (irritation or dysfunction of the nerves
leaving the brainstem.
