Spinal fluid percolates around the brain
in a space known as the subarachnoid space. The fine
arachnoid membrane, which looks like a spider web (therefore
it is called arachnoid, as in spider like), contains
the cerebrospinal fluid. The subarachnoid spaces are
compartmentalized into a number of cisterns, particularly
around the base of the brain. These are individual pockets
of cerebrospinal fluid. Through the subarachnoid space
runs the cerebral arteries and veins.
